Why is queer cinema so much better than anything else right now? It's taking the romance genre and giving relationships a genuine realness and intimate believability to them. There's honesty and rawness in the way they portray the physical nature of relationships and God's Own Country takes all of that on and succeeds at it immensely. A hardened romance with Northern England's vast landscape as the backdrop. It's vulnerable, transformative and subdued with a screenplay that relies more on its characters and their actions instead of its dialogue. Striking direction and shot with such sincerity, it's another gay romance for the ages.

i was lucky enough to attend a screening with a director q&a afterwards, in which francis lee revealed that one of his biggest influences for this film was pretty woman to everyone's delight.
other highlights:
- the sounds of the yorkshire countryside are very key to the film; gheorghe has his own special wind sound that follows him through the film and remains after he has left, like an audio haunting
- bird sounds in the film are also significant - the curlew is associated with spring and renewal, and the swallow is a migratory bird that returns for spring
- lee consciously avoided sweeping landscape shots (there's only one in the film) and focused instead on how the land…

literally everytime i see that dumb 'sex scenes are never necessary in the movies' discourse on twitter i think about this film because it's such a great counter example: just 3 sex scenes tell us so much about johnny and show his development the way the dialogue simply never could!

Kameramann James Richards fotografiert auf wunderschöne Art und Weise die Gesichter der Menschen in der kargen Landschaft Yorkshires. Zum Camera Gear habe ich leider nichts gefunden, ich würde aber mal auf eine 35mm-RED sowie auf eine konstante Brennweite von 50mm in Verbindung mit Blenden ab T1.2 tippen. Die Farbpalette erinnert an stark an die LOAF Presets von Archipelago (das ist ein Kompliment). Zum Glück wurde sich für das formatfüllende 1.85 : 1 Seitenverhältnis entschieden, denn so können Gesichter und Landschaft ausgezeichnet und auf naturalistische Weise wirken.
Die Parallelen zu Brokeback Mountain sind unübersehbar, God’s own country funktioniert aber voll und ganz als eigenständiger Film mit starken DarstellerInnen und der eben schon erwähnten, fantastischen Kamera von Joshua Richards. Er ist ein gelungener Vertreter des New Queer Cinema.
Auch die Tiere sind toll. Faszinierend, wie trist und doch lecker Nudeln mit Tomatensauce und Bier ohne Schaum aussehen können.

Not to sound pretentious but this movie is a parade of changing emotions and feelings, it’s a whole experience! Starting from the very beginning and the unexpected scene in which main character shoved his whole arm into a cow’s ass (yes, i already mentioned it in another review), God’s Own Country continued to surprise me, make me cry, yearn, smile, but it never made me feel bored. I cried four times, two of which happened because of the cute lamb, THEY MADE HIM A SWEATER!! Another time I cried was in the beginning when the main character had to shoot a cow and the last one was at the end. I still think about the ending of this film. And…
