Excuse me while I pick my jaw up off the floor. I was not prepared for this movie. There is so much packed into it that it’ll be impossible for me to dissect. The first 2/3 has some of the most haunting atmosphere coupled with terrifying imagery I’ve ever experienced. Constant goosebumps. I can’t state how important a score is when crafting the mood of a movie more emphatically. Unnerving and otherworldly - much like our lead character. There’s…

    Lost in Translation

    👍

Lost in Translation has been a favorite and important film in my life. It influenced my taste in movies as well as the music I listen to now. While it’s always resonated with me, I actually connect with it now more than ever. Bob and Charlotte are kindred spirits who meet at the loneliest and most unexpected moment in life. Both are in empty marriages looking for something. Both say “I love you” to their spouses, but do they…

My first foray into Mario Bava and I’m already a fan. All three stories were stylish as hell which has become synonymous with Italian horror. Those first couple whimsically lit scenes and I was in love. Bava shows his versatility in that each story is wildly different visually, yet feels cohesive. It takes a special kind of horror from this era to creep me out, and that ghost…

Take a bow Brandon Cronenberg. Clearly influenced by his dad with the elements of body and technological horror, but has forged his own style. An absolute fuck you to corporations treating us like slaves. It’s such a depressing theme that is made even more potent the dream-like visuals. One of those films that puts you in a trance and keeps you there. Being a horror aficionado, I feel like I’m pretty desensitized to…

    The Criterion Challenge 2021

    5. Released on Laserdisc

My mind is blown. I’ve heard the hype surround Akira, but I wasn’t prepared for the complexity of the plot. There is a lot to unpack. So much so that I don’t even know where to start, nor do I fully understand everything I just saw. There’s this transcendence theme that culminates in a breath-taking finale reminiscent of 2001: A Space Odyssey. I can’t help but feel like Tetsuo and…

    Inland Empire

I always find it difficult to write an articulate review after watching a Lynch film, and Inland Empire is no different. A three hour feverish nightmare odyssey. Lynch’s most challenging film even for the most hardened fan. I haven’t discovered the key that unlocks this movie. One viewing is simply not enough. Let me say though, this was an experience. It’s not a pleasant ride. It’s disorienting, fantastical and absolutely abstract. I don’t believe Lynch gets enough credit for…
